START Headquarters
Arie Kruglanski, Jocelyn Belanger and Rohan Gunaratna will launch their book, “The Three Pillars of Radicalization: Needs, Narratives, and Networks,” with an event at START headquarters 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 5. The event includes a panel discussion among the book authors moderated by START Founding Director Gary LaFree, and a keynote address given by the Honorable Juan Zarate, who is the chairman and co-founder of the Financial Integrity Network, a senior adviser at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, and chairman of the Center on Economic and Financial Power.
All are welcome to attend the event, but RSVPs are required. Light refreshments will be served. If you are not a START affiliate, please email Eva Coll (escoll@umd.edu) if you're interested in attending for more information.
During the panel, the authors will address the determinants of radicalization and deradicalization, and the three major ingredients of the process that turns radical beliefs into violent behaviors. In “The Three Pillars of Radicalization,” the authors debut a new model of radicalization that identifies factors underlying the individual's quest for significance. Synthesizing varied empirical evidence, the book reinterprets prior theories of radicalization and examines major issues in deradicalization and recidivism, which will only become more relevant as communities continue to negotiate the threat of extremism.
