While this program is no longer being offered, START previously engaged talented undergraduate students pursuing degrees in the social and behavioral sciences in research related to understanding origins and/or responses to terrorism through the Undergraduate Research Program (URP). By involving undergraduates in ongoing research projects, START prepared today's students for future study and work in the areas of terrorism, counter-terrorism, and homeland security.
Towards this goal, the Center invited 5 undergraduates to participate in START's research as part of its Undergraduate Research Program (URP) each academic year. Those selected to participate in the program engaged in original research related to START’s research agenda under the mentorship of a START Investigator and Mentor. Mentors worked to involve the URP awardee directly in their ongoing research in order to develop the student’s research and analysis skills. They also provided advice on the awardee's personal research. This year of research culminated in a significant research paper and a presentation of those findings at STARTs Annual Meeting. Further, these students attended the International Studies Association Annual Conference during their year in the program to increase their exposure to the latest research in the field.
