A consortium of researchers dedicated to improving the understanding of the human causes and consequences of terrorism

START Offers New Winter Courses

This winter, START is offering two courses open to any individual, whether they are currently enrolled in a degree granting program or not. Classes will begin on January 5, 2015 and the deadline to register is January 7. The winter term ends January 23. The courses are: “Geospatial Analysis for Terrorism” and “Social Network Analysis for Terrorism.”

The Geospatial Analysis for Terrorism course (BSST399F) is one credit and does not require prerequisites or previous experience. Students will be able to gain valuable skills in Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) and more specifically, how the technology applies to the field of terrorism studies.

The Social Network Analysis (SNA) for Terrorism course (BSST399N) is also one credit. SNA is at the center of many discussions about terrorism and political violence research. Students will gain an in depth understanding of how to apply SNA methods to terrorism-related data.

These focused courses will provide students with skills that are easily transferable to many professions within the security studies realm. For more information on the UMD winter term and application procedures for both UMD and non-UMD students, view the Office of Extended Studies website.
