Turkish researchers from the Center for Middle Eastern Strategic Studies (ORSAM) recently visited START to present their ongoing research into ISIL and the terrorist group’s use of propaganda. In addition to offering a lecture, Haldun Yalcinkaya and Bedii Celik sought feedback from START researchers and students on their latest publications.
- “Twitter Social Network Analysis on Turkish Speaking DAESH Supporters,” takes a closer look at ISIL’s abuse of social media platforms, particularly Twitter, in propaganda and recruitment in Turkey, noting that the impact there is unprecedented as the region is already affected by the civil war in Syria.
- “Propaganda of Terror: Konstantiniyye Magazine and the Discourse of Daesh,” examines a Turkish-language magazine produced by ISIL to publicize its social services, military operations and foreign policy goals. The article goes on to discuss the larger multi-dimensional ISIL communication strategy at play.
The researchers were here as part of ORSAM’s efforts to diversify sources of information on the Middle East and bring to light perspectives and research from Turkish academia. ORSAM is a nonpartisan and non-profit research center based in Ankara that carries out research on social, economic and political developments in the Middle East.
