SALARY RANGE: low- to mid-$50k, commensurate with experience
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: The primary role of the Web/Database Programmer and Developer is to ensure and enhance the online presence of START. START (National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism) is a grant-funded research center based in the College of Behavioral and Social Science at the University of Maryland that is engaged in long-term projects related to improving understanding of the dynamics of terrorist behavior.
START's website is a primary means of disseminating information about START's programs to a broad audience, including scholars, policy-makers, homeland-security professionals, journalists, and students. The START Web/Database Programmer and Developer is a full-time exempt staff position at the University of Maryland, College Park, that reports directly to the START Executive Director. The following fall within the scope of work of this position:
- Database Management: Maintaining data for START's public website (http://start.cgdevx.com) and a related content management system
- Web Application Development: Enhancing existing and creating new Web-based applications, including but not limited to the creation of interactive features and tools that facilitate analysis of quantitative data
- Server Maintenance: Working with computing units on campus to ensure the security and stability of START's server
Position Requirements: Qualified applicants will have a minimum of 1-2 years of programming experience with the following: Client-side coding: HTML/XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, AJAX, and the DOM and DHTML Server-side coding (in a Windows IIS Environment): SQLServer and Transact-SQL, "Classic" ASP and ASP.NET. Qualified applicants will also be proficient with MS Access and other MS Office software, and will have a demonstrated ability to integrate audio and video files, Flash animations, Java Applets, etc., into Web pages and applications. Qualified applicants must possess a Bachelor's Degree and preference will be given to those who have experience working with higher education institutions, research organizations, and/or non-profits preferred. In addition, preference will be given to those with experience working with:
- XML and related technologies (e.g., XSLT)
- CGI with Perl or other language(s)
- Knowledge of statistics and statistical software (e.g., SPSS)
- Flash animation and programming (ActionScript)
