The National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) is hiring a full-time senior researcher to work at START's headquarters at the University of Maryland, College Park. This is a full-time non-tenure research position with a 12-month term starting in September 2010.

Responsibilities: The senior researcher will be a member of a research team engaged in a multiyear study of the nature and impacts of government countermeasures on the evolution of extremist and terrorist movements. The researcher will lead original data collection and quantitative coding of counterterrorism measures taken against five terrorist groups/movements. The researcher will also help oversee open source document collection and coding being conducted by graduate and undergraduate student research interns.
The researcher may assist with quantitative data analyses, drafting reports for the Department of Homeland Security, and preparing manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals. The researcher will report directly to a University of Maryland faculty member and will work closely with the leadership of START. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated experience in systematic data collection from a range of open-source resources. Preference will be given to candidates with graduate level coursework in areas related to terrorism and extremism. Qualifications:
- M.A. in a field relevant to the nature of this project
- Graduate level coursework in quantitative research design and methodology
- Experience working as part of a research team
