JOB OPPORTUNITY: Full-time Paid Summer IT Intern Position

START is now hiring a full-time Paid IT Intern for the Summer of 2011. START, The National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism is a U.S. Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence based at the University of Maryland. Approximately 20 full-time and part-time employees currently work at START's offices at the University of Maryland.

JOB SUMMARY:

The IT Intern works within the IT Team under the supervision of the IT System Programmer to develop online web applications within a four month time-frame (May-August).

PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • Assist the IT System Programmer with all web development activities
  • Develop and maintain ASP.NET and classic ASP based websites written in visual basic and C#.
  • Work closely within an IT Team of two developers and web graphics designer
  • Test all necessary changes to current web applications
  • Document user requirements on an ongoing basis.

COMPENSATION: Commensurate with experience. This position is a full-time paid summer position that is not eligible for benefits.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Currently pursuing a bachelor degree, or graduate degree, in computer science or related field or a recent graduate.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrable working knowledge of ASP, ASP.NET, JavaScript, JQuery, C# and Visual Basic. Working knowledge of Windows Server and IIS6. Working knowledge of SQL language, Oracle db and MS SQL db. Working knowledge of CSS, HTML, and XML.
  • Ability to commit to work full-time from May 31, 2011 (or earlier) through August 31, 2011. Limited unpaid leave will be available over the summer but should not be used in excess. This position is open to both current undergraduate students and graduate students.

PREFERENCE WILL BE GIVEN TO APPLICANTS WITH:

  • Advanced knowledge of ASP, ASP.NET, JavaScript, JQuery, C# and Visual Basic. Advanced knowledge of Windows Server and IIS6.
  • Advanced knowledge of SQL language, Oracle db and MS SQL db. Advanced knowledge of CSS, HTML, and XML.
  • Experience working in a university setting, especially at the University of Maryland.
  • Familiarity with START and interest and knowledge in the subject area of social sciences, terrorism studies or homeland security.
  • High level of attention to detail and ability to work well with all of START's customers, including DHS, university professors and departments, research center directors, researchers, students, etc.
