Terrorism scholar Jaime Shoemaker will present the next segment in START's Research Roundtable series at 3:15 p.m. Thursday, May 3 in Symons Hall, Room 3121.
The presentation will center on four case studies?Ahmed Ressam, Ghazi Ibrahim Abu Mezer, the 1993 World Trade Center bombers and the North Carolina cigarette smuggling group? that examine in depth how potential terrorists seek to exploit U.S. borders and enter the country. Drawing from the analysis of the four studies, Shoemaker will also share common themes and potential areas for further policy development for counterterrorism officials and border security experts alike.
Shoemaker currently serves as a research assistant at START, working primarily on the Global Terrorism Database and other related projects. In 2010, she worked for the United Nations Global Programme Against Money-Laundering, Proceeds of Crime and the Financing of Terrorism in Vienna, Austria; and received a master's degree in international policy studies with a specialization in terrorism from the Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS). In 2007, Shoemaker obtained a bachelor's degree in international relations with a minor in Spanish from the University of Redlands.
