The Human Use of Human Beings: A Dynamic, Integrative Understanding of Suicide Bombing

Date:

START hosts Jeffrey Lewis 11 a.m. May 2

START will host terrorism scholar and former START postdoctoral researcher Jeffrey Lewis as he discusses "The Human Use of Human Beings: A Dynamic, Integrative Understanding of Suicide Bombing," 11 a.m. Thursday, May 2 at START (8400 Baltimore Ave., Suite 250, College Park, MD 20740). The event is free and open to the public.

The talk complements on Lewis' well-received book "The Business of Martyrdom," which he began as a START postdoctoral student. Billed as the only comprehensive history available of suicide bombing from its origins in Imperial Russia to the current day, "The Business of Martyrdom" examines the bombers, their societies, and the organizations that train and sponsor them. Lewis draws on the history and philosophy of technology in order to explain the evolution and diffusion of suicide bombing over time and from region to region.

Lewis' research focuses on the history of science and technology, particularly their importance for national policy and security concerns. For nearly 10 years, he has been teaching in the Undergraduate International Studies Program at the Ohio State University, where his courses focus on current security issues, such as "Terror and Terrorism," "The Development and Control of 'Weapons of Mass Destruction,'" and "Science, Technology, and the Cold War."
