Functional Title: Open-Source RDBMS and Cloud Application Adviser
Schedule: up to 20 hours/week
Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) at the University of Maryland, College Park, is hiring one hourly employee to work with the technical team of the ICONS Project, START’s in-house simulation and wargaming team.
The ICONS Project creates simulations and scenario-driven exercises to advance participants’ understanding of complex problems and strengthen their ability to make decisions, navigate crises, think strategically, and negotiate collaboratively. ICONS develops and manages the ICONSnet software platform for hosting role-play simulations, computational models, wargames, and scientific research on topics affecting democracy, security, and prosperity. The web-based platform supports human-to-human, text-based interactions, and is used by a number of educational institutions and government agencies.
The ICONS Project is looking for a software developer to advise and work with technical staff on a planned web application migration from a proprietary backend stack (Oracle RDBMS and Oracle REST Data Services) to an open source cloud-based solution (AWS, PostgreSQL, Python). Our goal is to successfully recreate our current applications within an open-source framework, while adding capabilities to 1) better meet our business goals and 2) more flexibly serve our clients.
This is a part-time, hourly position starting immediately. Much of the work may be carried out remotely, but regular meetings with staff will likely need to take place in-person at START’s offices during normal business hours in the U.S. Eastern Time zone.
Minimum Requirements:
- Proficiency with SQL (particularly Oracle & PL/SQL and PostgreSQL & PL/pgSQL)
- Proficiency with Python
- Experience using and managing relational databases
- Experience setting up and managing web applications and environments via AWS
- Experience with using containers (Docker or similar)
- Experience with GitHub or other similar version control systems
Preferences:
- Experience with HTML, JavaScript, CSS
- Experience with responsive design for user interfaces
- Experience with API development
- Experience with computational notebooks
Physical Demands: Work is performed remotely requiring the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards.
