Incident Summary:

07/02/2020: Assailants kidnapped 3-6 people, including two police officers, two soldiers, a public official, and a civilian in Mera, Pastaza, Ecuador. The hostages were released on July 4, 2020. Shuar extremists claimed responsibility for the incident and stated that they abducted the officials in order to demand the release of the body of their community leader, Alberto Mashutak, who was buried by the government after he died from COVID-19. Sources stated that the group viewed Mashutak's burial as "a violation of collective and cultural rights."
