Incident Summary:
06/30/2020: Assailants armed with machetes, sticks, and grenades attacked non-Oromo civilians and businesses in Shashamene, Oromia, Ethiopia. An unknown number of civilians were killed and injured, and hundreds of schools, businesses, and residences were set on fire during the attack. This was one of nine related attacks which occurred in the aftermath of the assassination of Hachalu Hundessa, a musician and civil rights activist. No group claimed responsibility for the incident; however, sources attributed the attack to the Oromo Liberation Front. Sources also noted that the assailants chanted "This land is Oromo land" during the assault and had a list of residents' names and their ethnicities which they used to target non-Oromo residents.

Criteria
Criteria 1
The act must be aimed at attaining a political, economic, religious, or social goal. In terms of economic goals, the exclusive pursuit of profit does not satisfy this criterion. It must involve the pursuit of more profound, systemic economic change.

Successful Attack
Success of a terrorist strike is defined according to the tangible effects of the attack. For example, in a typical successful bombing, the bomb detonates and destroys property and/or kills individuals, whereas an unsuccessful bombing is one in which the bomb is discovered and defused or detonates early and kills the perpetrators. Success is not judged in terms of the larger goals of the perpetrators.
