Incident Summary:
12/11/2018: An assailant, armed with a firearm and a knife, attacked civilians at a Christmas market along Rue des Orfevres, Strasbourg, Grand-Est, France. Five civilians were killed and 11 others were injured in the attack. The assailant was killed by authorities on December 13, 2018. Cherif Chekatt, an unaffiliated individual, claimed responsibility for the incident and pledged allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL)'s Amaq News Agency claimed that Chekatt was a "soldier" of ISIL; however, the French Interior Minister refuted the claim.

Success of a terrorist strike is defined according to the tangible effects of the attack.
