05/21/2017: A grenade detonated outside the residence of Esperence Hakizimana in Bujumbura, Bujumbura Mairie, Burundi. Hakizimana, the Kamenge area chief for the National Council for the Defense of Democracy—Forces for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD-FDD), was unharmed; however, eight people were injured in the blast. No group claimed responsibility for the incident.

Criteria 1
The act must be aimed at attaining a political, economic, religious, or social goal. In terms of economic goals, the exclusive pursuit of profit does not satisfy this criterion. It must involve the pursuit of more profound, systemic economic change.

Success of a terrorist strike is defined according to the tangible effects of the attack.
