Incident Summary:

12/24/2016: Three assailants abducted Sophie Petronin from her home in Gao, Mali. Petronin, a French-Swiss aid worker for Aide Gao, was released on October 8, 2020. No group claimed responsibility for the incident; however, sources attributed the attack to Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM). In addition, on July 1, 2017, Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) released a proof-of-life video showing the hostage.
