12/24/2014: Assailants shot down a Royal Jordanian Air Force (RJAF) aircraft and kidnapped the pilot, Maaz al-Kassasbeh, near Raqqah city, Raqqah governorate, Syria. Al-Kassasbeh, an RJAF first lieutenant, was executed on January 3, 2015. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) claimed responsibility for the attack.
