Incident Summary:

08/04/2013: Assailants kidnapped Steven Sotloff, a freelance journalist from the United States, near Aleppo city, Aleppo province, Syria. On August 19, 2014, Sotloff appeared in a video released by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) that depicted the execution of another journalist, James Foley. The group threatened to execute Sotloff as well if the United States did not halt airstrikes in Iraq. Sotloff was reportedly beheaded on September 2, 2014.
