Incident Summary:
07/21/2013: Assailants attacked the Abu Ghraib prison in Abu Ghraib, Al Anbar, Iraq. The attack, which lasted through the night, employed suicide bombers and explosives-laden vehicles, as well as mortar rounds and rocket-propelled grenades. At least 14 people were killed and another 19 people were injured; in addition, at least 500 prisoners escaped, although many were later recaptured. This was one of two prisons attacked in Iraq on this day. Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) claimed responsibility for these incidents.

Criteria
Criteria 1
The act must be aimed at attaining a political, economic, religious, or social goal. In terms of economic goals, the exclusive pursuit of profit does not satisfy this criterion. It must involve the pursuit of more profound, systemic economic change.

Successful Attack
Success of a terrorist strike is defined according to the tangible effects of the attack. Success is not judged in terms of the larger goals of the perpetrators. For example, a bomb that exploded in a building would be counted as a success even if it did not, for example, succeed in bringing the building down or inducing government repression.
