02/01/2013: Gunmen attacked a bank and engaged in a firefight with security forces in Kafountine village, Ziguinchor region, Senegal. Approximately five people, including two assailants and a French national, were killed in the attack. No group claimed responsibility for the incident; however, authorities suspected that the Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance was involved in the violence.

Criteria 1

Successful Attack
Success of a terrorist strike is defined according to the tangible effects of the attack. For example, in a typical successful bombing, the bomb detonates and destroys property and/or kills individuals, whereas an unsuccessful bombing is one in which the bomb is discovered and defused or detonates early and kills the perpetrators. Success is not judged in terms of the larger goals of the perpetrators.
