01/17/2012: Assailants attacked Menaka, Gao, Mali. In addition to an unknown number of assailant casualties, at least one soldier was killed in the ensuing clash with Malian Army forces. The Azawad National Liberation Movement (MNLA) claimed responsibility for the incident and stated that the attack was carried out in order "to protect and progressively re-occupy Azawad territory and also respond to Bamako's provocation."
