Incident Summary:
11/23/2011: A group of at least eight militants attacked a police station in Dera Ismail Khan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Pakistan. The assailants arrived in three vehicles and began firing rockets inside the police station, followed by hand grenades. Police officers from surrounding areas came to assist in the response; the two sides exchanged fire for approximately two hours. At least one officer was killed in the attack and at least another four were injured. There were no reports of assailant casualties or injuries. No group claimed responsibility for the incident and specific motive is unknown; however, the incident occurred one day after Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) declared a ceasefire.

Criteria
Criteria 1
The act must be aimed at attaining a political, economic, religious, or social goal. In terms of economic goals, the exclusive pursuit of profit does not satisfy this criterion. It must involve the pursuit of more profound, systemic economic change.

Success of a terrorist strike is defined according to the tangible effects of the attack. For example, in a typical successful bombing, the bomb detonates and destroys property and/or kills individuals, whereas an unsuccessful bombing is one in which the bomb is discovered and defused or detonates early and kills the perpetrators. Success is not judged in terms of the larger goals of the perpetrators.
