Incident Summary:
10/21/2009: On Wednesday evening, 15 people were injured when unidentified attackers threw a bomb at the car of a Bangladesh politician, Fazle Noor Tapas. Tapas, a member of parliament from the Awami League party of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, escaped unhurt in the attack in central Dhaka. The bomb hit the car as Tapas was getting into it. Police said eight people were taken to hospital. Police said they were trying to determine the type of the bomb and the motive behind the attack. Police and intelligence officials say the militants, mostly from two outlawed Islamist gangs, are trying to regroup and may launch fresh attacks. Earlier they targeted lawyers, judges, police and others. No group has claimed responsibility.

Criteria
Criteria 1
The act must be aimed at attaining a political, economic, religious, or social goal. In terms of economic goals, the exclusive pursuit of profit does not satisfy this criterion. It must involve the pursuit of more profound, systemic economic change.

Successful Attack
Success of a terrorist strike is defined according to the tangible effects of the attack. For example, in a typical successful bombing, the bomb detonates and destroys property and/or kills individuals, whereas an unsuccessful bombing is one in which the bomb is discovered and defused or detonates early and kills the perpetrators. Success is not judged in terms of the larger goals of the perpetrators. For example, a bomb that exploded in a building would be counted as a success even if it did not, for example, succeed in bringing the building down or inducing government repression.
