Incident Summary:

01/09/2004: Five people were killed and 37 injured as a powerful bomb went off outside the Shi'a Sadiq Mohammed mosque in Baqouba, Iraq. The bombing was aimed at inflaming sectarian tensions in the religiously mixed town. The bomb was timed to detonate just as Friday prayers concluded when attendance was highest, in an attempt to maximize casualties. Apparently the improvised explosive device was rigged to a gas cylinder, and placed on a bicycle near the entrance to the mosque. Although no particular group was suspected of involvement, because of the sectarian nature of the attack it seems to have been perpetrated by a Sunni group.
