Incident Summary:

01/07/2004: Armed gunmen penetrated the residence of Timothy Shelpidi and fatally shot the prominent retired Nigerian General in the Nigerian capital city of Abuja. Five gunmen overpowered guards protecting Shelpidi and proceeded to shoot him in the chest, thighs and buttocks before fleeing the scene. Shelpidi has made an entry into politics since his retirement from the military, contesting for the governorship of the northern state of Gombe in 2003. This constitutes the third time a prominent Nigerian politician has come under fire since the Christmas holiday, although this was the first fatality in the series of attacks.
