Incident Summary:

01/07/2004: Insurgents sprayed a police checkpoint with automatic weapons fire west of Kirkuk, Iraq. As a civilian vehicle was stopped at the checkpoint, militants shot and killed an Iraqi police officer as well as the civilian stopped at the checkpoint. The checkpoint was erected in response to a recent wave of car bombings in the area. The exact affiliation of the militants was unknown.
