Incident Summary:
11/1/2001: Hundreds of armed assailants attacked Waimulang village on Buru island, Maluku province, Indonesia. The assailants were from the western part of the region and were armed with grenades, improvised explosive devices, and standard weapons. Three villagers were killed and ten houses were burned down; thousands of villagers fled the attack. Specific motive is unknown; however, Waimulang village is predominantly Christian and Maluku province has been the site of violent conflict between Christians and Muslims for two years.

Criteria
Criteria 1
The act must be aimed at attaining a political, economic, religious, or social goal. In terms of economic goals, the exclusive pursuit of profit does not satisfy this criterion. It must involve the pursuit of more profound, systemic economic change.
