05/23/2000: Two member of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) staged a failed assassination attempt against M. K. Gunawardena, a ruling party politician, in Kantalai, Northeastern province, Sri Lanka. The politician and five others escaped with injuries, while the both perpetrators were killed in the incident.
