Incident Summary:

4/9/2000: Approximately 10 members of the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) raided the home of Dhananjoy Debbarma, a candidate for the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), in Belbari, Tripura, India. The assailants kidnapped Debbarma's father. This was one in a series of kidnappings of family members of candidates of the ruling Left Front who were contesting the upcoming Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) polls. The NLFT demanded that the candidates withdraw from the elections in return for the safety of their family members.
