Incident Summary:

08/14/1999: A small bomb exploded close to an Independence Day ceremony addressed by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in Islamabad, Pakistan. Dunya Gul, who was said to be a religious extremist, was arrested after the "low intensity explosion," which occurred about a kilometer from the parliament building as Sharif started a speech after the traditional flag-hoisting ceremony. The perpetrator told police he did not want to cause harm and his aim was to vent his anger over the government's "failure" to implement Islamic law.
