Social, Behavioral, Cultural, and Economic (SBCE) Impacts on Terrorist Activity

Project Details

Abstract:

Gary LaFree and his interdisciplinary team will focus on elucidating the environment of terrorism with projects concentrating on predictors of terrorist activity. In developing models of the SBCE environment, researchers will draw from the expanding theoretical and empirical research on causes of terrorism. This effort, however, will strive to build a comprehensive model, integrating multiple SBCE conditions. The research team will consider measures of national governance, including regime type, regime stability (as well as state fragility specifically), levels of corruption, and presence of specific institutions associated with robust democracies (e.g., free and fair elections, a transparent judicial system, existence of a capable police force, institutionalized gender equality).
