Incident Summary:

07/20/2020: Assailants abducted Hella Mewis near her office on Abu Nuwas Street in Karrada, Baghdad, Iraq. Mewis, a German activist and the head of the Bait Tarkib art collective, was released on July 24, 2020. No group claimed responsibility; however, sources attributed the attack to an Iran-backed militia. In addition, Mewis was released in exchange for a member of a "faction close to the Hashed al-Shaabi," who had been arrested in connection with the kidnapping.
